Background
Bela's School of Music is a vocal based Indian music school with a focus on the fundamentals of South Asian music. To give a brief overview, I, Bela Bhatt Modi, have had over 3 decades of experience singing & performing across North America since the age of 4. I have performed widely across North America and abroad, in most genres of South Asian music, be it Bollywood, Pop, Ghazals, Sufi, Bhajans, and Folk Songs in 6 South Asian languages.
I have also had the incredible honor of performing on the same platform as Legends & Highly Acclaimed Artists of South Asian Music & Entertainment such as: Hariharan, Atif Aslam, Runa Laila, Falguni Pathak, Kunal Ganjawala, Sukhbir, RDB, Josh, Shaan, ShahRukh Khan in Pop/Bhangra, to touring with Ghazal Maestros Ustad Ghulam Ali (my greatest honor thus far having done 5 tours with him), Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, Habib Wali Mohammed, Asif Ali, Munni Begum, Asif Mehdi Hassan, to name a few. I have also successfully launched 2 music albums in my career.
Music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I lived for it from the time I was little - singing, performing on stage before hundreds and thousands, traveling, recordings, rehearsals. I'm extremely thankful to all those that helped me achieve what I set out to do, especially my husband, parents, siblings, and my former promoter Musik Waves. I am blessed to have been able to do what I love the most with their support, and the grace of God.
Goals
The goals of this school are: Developing students voices with vocal training; Teach breathing techniques, (which is key to being able to sing); Enhancing performance techniques: including expressions thru voice & body gestures; and generally instilling an appreciation of all genres of Indian music. Lessons on learning the harmonium and keyboard shall also be provided simultaneously to interested students.
I will be teaching the basics of Indian classical music thru Raagas, but throughout will be focusing on the students' innate knowledge of music, making it both instinctive and interesting. In practicing theoretical aspects of music, one tends to rely less on their instinctive knowledge of music, which is what I will be providing. Music is the voice & language of the soul. One needs to sing and connect to music from their soul to be able to add their own flair to the song.
